Fire engulfs furniture making unit in Erode, loss pegged at ₹10 lakh
Erode: A major fire broke out at a furniture manufacturing unit at Periya Valasu area in the early hours of Saturday.
Materials worth 10 lakh were gutted in the incident.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
Police said the fire broke out at the unit belonging to V Ponnusamy, 55, of Kongu Nagar. He was into the production and sale of furniture for homes and shops.
The unit had around five workers.
Around 2am, locals noticed fire at the unit and alerted the fire and rescue services personnel. The flames were put out after a two-hour struggle.
“The fire destroyed a significant amount of wooden furniture and appliances,” a firefighter said. The estimated value of the damaged property, including timber items and machines, is around 10 lakh.
A police officer said, “We are investigating the cause of the fire. It is not clear if it was caused due to an electrical short-circuit or some other factor.”
The Veerappanchatram police have registered a case and initiated an inquiry into the incident.
