RONGALI BIHU

œ If you wish to witness the colourful traditions of Assam then plan it around the Rongali Bihu Festival in April. Also known as Bohaag Bihu, it is considered as a festival of merriment. Harvest brings much joy to all and thus, the Rongali Bihu Festival is celebrated with much fanfare to mark the beginning of the New Year, which is also the time to sow new seeds. Interesting fact being the Rongali Bihu Festival is the spring time Bihu and is said to have sub-divisions as well.

The first day of Rongali Bihu is called the eGaru Bihuf. This is the day when bulls and cows are bathed with turmeric, fed with gourds and brinjals and provided with new attaching ropes. The second day of the Rongali Bihu festival is called the Manush Bihu, when everyone dons new outfits. Special dishes are prepared for feasts and charitable donations are made.

The Rongali Bihu Festival is an integral part of the Bihu Festival of Assam, which continues for seven days. Apart from the feasts and other features, the main attraction of the festival is the Bihu dancing. You can also join in the merriment and later, taste the rice-beer.

œ Thingyan Festival, which lasts for four days in April, marks the end of the hot, dry season and the joyful arrival of the New Year in Myanmar. Traditionally, initial day leads the locals to gather outside on the streets to have fun water fights. This tends to unite children and elders. When the New Year day sets in, the water shower and play gets stopped and a culturally-important ritual of releasing fish and birds into the wild is done. People also treat the monks with a lavish feast. Such celebrations can be also seen in neighbouring Myanmar Buddhist countries such as Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia.

MAHARASHTRA DAY

Maharashtra Day is marked with joyous fanfare on May 1 annually.

œ On this day in the year 1960, the state of Maharashtra was formed. The States Reorganisation Act, 1956, defined boundaries for states within India on the basis of languages and Sanyukt Maharashtra Andolan started demanding a separate state. This protest continued right till 1960 when the Bombay Reorganisation Act was passed by Indian Parliament to divide the multilingual state of Bombay into Gujarat and Maharashtra, with Ahmedabad. The legislation came into effect on May 1, 1960. To mark this, a parade is annually held at Shivaji Park in Mumbai where the Governor addresses a large gathering.
