UK tourism to Malta could be in for an upswing next year, according to one of Britain’s biggest tour operators.
The main draw is expected to be music festivals and film locations.
Chris Mottershead, managing director at Thomas Cook UK, told The Scotsman that ‘retro’ holiday destinations are set to make a comeback in 2018, and Malta, Madeira, the Costa Brava are expected to attract a new generation of holidaymakers.
“We’ve seen destinations move up and down the popularity stakes and next year we’re predicting that Malta, Madeira and Costa Brava will catch the attention of holidaymakers who perhaps didn’t think they ticked the right box for their needs,” Mr Mothershead said.
“From Michelin star restaurants in Costa Brava to music festivals in Malta and outstanding natural beauty in Madeira, these retro destinations really will challenge holidaymakers’ misconceptions.”
Malta, he explained, is becoming a destination for music lovers due to two annual festivals, Isle of MTV and Annie Mac Presents.
It has also been used as a filming location for Game Of Thrones, which is expected to attract fans of the popular show – although they could be in for a surprise when they find that Gozo’s Azure Window, a backdrop in Game of Thrones, has gone.
The UK is Malta's biggest tourism market, accounting for well in excess of a third of arrivals.
