CARSON CITY, Nev. — The Nevada Board of Educators has introduced a comprehensive interview process for candidates vying for State Superintendent of Public Instruction, as revealed during a special board meeting on Thursday. The board presented two rubrics designed to evaluate applicants thoroughly.

The first rubric is an instructional curriculum screening tool, which will assess candidates on their academic and professional achievements across 11 domains, ranging from executive leadership experience to alignment with Nevada's educational priorities. Applicants will be scored from "below expectations" to "exceeds expectations."

The second rubric requires candidates to craft a vision statement aimed at advancing educational outcomes for students statewide. This vision statement will also be evaluated using the same scoring system.

The Nevada Interim Superintendent of Public Instruction emphasized the importance of these criteria, stating, "As I listen to the State Board, I think they're looking for a leader that both has a vision that aligns with the State Board's vision for education in Nevada, a collaborative leader that communicates well, and a leader who has a demonstrable track record of increasing academic outcomes for kids."

Additionally, the board presented 28 sample questions during the meeting, which will be refined into a select few to be used in candidate interviews. This final selection of questions is expected to be completed by the board's meeting on July 30.

Applications for the position are due no later than July 21. Board members will review each candidate individually between July 23 through 28.

Candidates are expected to be selected for the interview process during the July 30 board meeting as well.

The search follows the departure of the former Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jhone Ebert, who is now the superintendent of the Clark County School District in Southern Nevada.

The rubrics and scoring material can be found here.
