TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Determining the most popular fruits worldwide is possible by analyzing the vast global production of these healthy commodities. While some countries are limited to growing specific fruits due to their climate, others make the most of seasonal shifts to harvest a wide variety throughout the year. This ever-changing dynamic transforms global fruit production into a colorful and thriving spectacle year after year.

Most Popular Fruits in the World by Production

Based on the findings of Statista, World Atlas, and The Science Agriculture, the most popular fruits in the world include staples like bananas, watermelons, and oranges. Other seasonal delights that made the list are as follows:

1. Bananas

Often a go-to for many diet plans. Bananas are evidently the most popular fruit in the world. They have smashed production records, hitting over 115 million metric tons in 2018 and soaring to an impressive 139 million by 2023.

Notably, bananas are as nutritious as they are convenient, providing a string of vitamins like B6 and C, along with fiber and magnesium.

2. Watermelons

Powerhouse producers like China, India, Brazil, and Algeria dominate the global watermelon scene. China alone reportedly cultivates a staggering 73 million tons each year.

Once treasured in ancient times and even etched into hieroglyphs, watermelons have carried their legacy into the modern world. Today, they reign as a quintessential summer staple, loved for their juicy, thirst-quenching sweetness.

3. Apples

Originating from Central Asia, apples have grown into one of the most popular fruits in the world, with global production reaching a jaw-dropping 97.34 million metric tons. Though these crisp delights trace their roots back to southern Kazakhstan, they have since become a global favorite.

Today, major producers like China, the United States, and Poland lead the charge, delivering hefty portions of the world’s supply year after year.

4. Grapes

Grape cultivation began flourishing across the Middle East as early as 4000 BC, laying the groundwork for the diverse range of grape varieties we enjoy today. Enduring thousands of years of legacies, grape families such as Concord, Black Corinth, Sweet Jubilee, Thompson Seedless, Valiant, Royal, Flame Seedless, and many others have retained their popularity, all thriving throughout Italy, the United States, China, Spain, and France.

5. Oranges

Universally cited as one of the most popular fruits in the world, oranges were first cultivated and developed in China, where citrus paved the way for their evolution. In 1493, Christopher  Columbus took the lead in introducing oranges to the Americans.

Now, these vitamin C superstars thrive in Brazil, which presently leads the world by producing over 15 million metric tons, accounting for a remarkable 20% of the global supply.

6. Mangoes

As one of the most popular fruits in the world, mangoes are credited with their worldwide production to India, which contributes half of the global supplies at more than 20 million metric tons annually.

Though this golden fruit has been cultivated for over 4,000 years in the Indo-Myanmar region, it was not until the 18th century that mangoes made their flavorful debut in the Americas.

7. Pineapples

When Europeans arrived in the Caribbean in 1493, they encountered lush landscapes dotted with pineapple plants. By the 16th century, Portuguese and Spanish explorers had begun spreading this tropical treasure across Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.

Thanks to its juicy, refreshing taste and rich nutritional value, pineapple quickly won hearts worldwide, especially in leading producers like Costa Rica, Indonesia, Brazil, and the Philippines, which now supply the lion’s share of the global harvest.

8. Peaches

One of the world’s most popular fruits, peaches are native to many Asian nations and are related to the Rosaceae family. Over time, global peach production has blossomed to an impressive 27 million metric tons, with China, Greece, Italy, and Türkiye emerging as the leading producers of this juicy summer favorite.

As climate, tradition, and innovation continue to shape global agriculture, these most popular fruits in the world stand out not only for their flavor but also for their remarkable presence in global production.
