NATO fighter jets were ready to take to the air.
On Thursday, July 10, the Lithuanian leadership was evacuated to emergency shelters because of a "drone" flown in from Belarus. Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas and Seimas Speaker Saulius Skvernialis were taken to shelters, while NATO fighter jets were ready to take to the air.
The Baltic States news agency BNS and the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
Lithuanian media initially reported the arrival of some analog of the Shahed drone, which, according to them, caused such a reaction of the security services. The speaker of the Seimas later confirmed to reporters: "The security service of the leadership indicated that we should go to shelter, so we went... It is important that now it is no longer flying."
The Lithuanian authorities soon refuted their assumptions and clarified the information. According to their official version, a "homemade airplane-like flying structure" made of "plywood and foam plastic" fell in Vilnius district in the afternoon.
The State Border Guard Service (VSAT) said the object posed no danger, and there was no cargo on board, according to preliminary data. Lithuanian border guards suggested it could have been an attempt to smuggle cigarettes.
The Lithuanian Defense Ministry added that an alert had been declared for NATO fighter jets that were in the air for training, but the order was canceled after the object fell.
