Sen. Rand Paul discusses Middle East conflict
(WYMT) - The White House is preparing for a meeting with Iran in the coming days.
This comes after President Donald Trump said he believes Iran’s war with Israel is over with following strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
WYMT spoke with U.S. Senator Rand Paul about his thoughts on the conflict and what it could mean for the United States as well as Kentuckians.
“The Constitution says we only go to war when Congress votes on it,” Sen. Paul said. “So it isn’t the will of one person, it isn’t the will of just a president that takes a country to war. It requires a vote of Congress. And I don’t think Congress, the majority of Congress is interested in another Middle Eastern war. So if the bombing run stops at that, hopefully we won’t get involved in another unending war in the Middle East. But I’ll do what I can to make sure that we don’t send any U.S. troops to Iran.”
Sen. Paul said he hopes Iran’s nuclear program will end, but believes it is too early to know whether or not the targeted sites were damaged beyond repair.
