NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - We’re seeing a few spotty sprinkles or very light rain this morning from Southwest Nebraska to North Central Nebraska. Most of these will likely fall apart by around mid-morning. But farther northwest in the Sandhills, there are some showers and thunderstorms. I anticipate more of these to fire up through the morning and into the afternoon. Most of these will move across Northern Nebraska through the day. Later in the day and into this evening, a few stronger storms may fire up across both Northern Nebraska and Western Nebraska (Highway 83 & Highway 61 areas). The chance of severe weather isn’t very high, but there is a small chance of severe storms, mainly over the northern third of Nebraska. Large hail and severe wind gusts will be the main threats. After midnight, most of the showers and thunderstorms will fall apart before they make their way too far southeast. Much of Nebraska and Northern Kansas will not experience rain or thunderstorms. The other story is the heat and the wind in store for today. Most of us will warm up into the low to mid 90s. The exception will be far northwestern areas and into the Panhandle where highs will be in the 80s. Winds will pick up out of the south southwest, increase to around 10 to 20+ mph. Some gusts will be up around 30 mph. Overnight, lows will fall back to the low to mid 60s. There will be some 50s for those western and northwestern areas.

For most, tomorrow will again be a mostly sunny day. Temperatures may come down slightly, but dew points will be creeping up as it becomes a little more humid. Highs will be in the upper 80s and lower 90s for most. Again tomorrow afternoon, thunderstorms will fire up over Western Nebraska. Some isolated thunderstorms could fire up over North Central Nebraska. As these push east into the evening, they should be a little more widespread than this evening. The chance of severe storms is also a bit better. Large hail and severe wind gusts will be the main threats, mainly over northern and western parts of the area. The threat again gets lower as you go to the southeast.

Of the next three days, Friday may be the “coolest”. Highs will mostly be in the mid to upper 80s and lower 90s. More thunderstorms will be possible Friday afternoon and especially Friday evening. Again, chances will be west over western portions of the area. Severe weather will again be possible.

More very warm weather is ahead of us for the weekend. Start tomorrow and continuing through the weekend, we will start seeing more humidity. Highs over the weekend will mostly be in the upper 80s and lower 90s. The chance for thunderstorms, mostly late in the day and into the evening/overnight hours will continue. Chances may get better early next week as a cool front approaches. Highs on Monday will still be up in the upper 80s and low to mid 90s. Tuesday and Wednesday will bring a temporary cool-down. Highs on Tuesday look to come down to the upper 70s and low to mid 80s. Highs will mostly be in the 80s on Wednesday. Look for heat to build back in later next week into the following weekend.
