When considering Europe's top cities, London is a given. Paris, Madrid, Vienna also make the list.

But Reykjavik?

Perhaps not your initial thought - especially as many overlook that Iceland is even part of Europe. The capital has been underestimated for years but back in 2022, it finally received its well-deserved recognition - being acclaimed as the best city in all of Europe.

Yes, it's a bit off the beaten track, being in Iceland and all, and not as straightforward a journey as London to Paris, but if you give Reykjavik a chance, it truly is something special. For starters, it's like stepping into a fairy tale.

The city's name literally translates to 'Smoky Lake', a nod to the steam that rises from the region's hot springs. Head to the coast and you'll see whales, puffins, and dramatic coves reminiscent of an old pirate tale.

Forget Paris or Madrid - why not head north this summer?

You might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights, a breathtaking spectacle that tourists marvel at and locals consider commonplace. Hence, CountryLiving crowned Reykjavik as 2022's best European city.

Its architecture may not be everyone's cup of tea, a unique mix of the very old and the very new, but the slightly rough charm perfectly complements the city's rugged surroundings. The sight of illuminated church spires against a mountainous backdrop is particularly captivating.

For the fussy eaters, it might take a bit of getting used to, but for the true foodies, it's an absolute delight. Vogue has put together a list of seven must-try dishes if you're eager to taste local cuisine.

At the top of the list is something somewhat familiar - a hot dog, but with an Icelandic twist, made from beef, lamb and pork. Then there's Skyr, a dish that's not quite yoghurt, but is thick, creamy, and instantly adored by dairy lovers.

The oddest of all is fermented shark, even more peculiar is the fact that most locals give it a wide berth. However, for Icelanders, it symbolises a time when food was scarce, and drastic measures were needed to preserve it.

So why not swap your Parisian cafes, your Madrid sangria and your Berlin raves (you know who you are) for something a bit more unique this year?
