Audio: Interview With Minister Owen Darrell
As the island gears up for one of its most cherished national celebrations, Owen Darrell, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, has shared what Bermuda Day means to him – personally and professionally.
For Minister Darrell, Bermuda Day is more than a public holiday. It is a vibrant expression of identity, heritage, and community spirit.
“That’s the uniqueness of Heritage Day,” Minister Darrell told Bernews during a recent Bernews News & Views interview
“People find different ways to celebrate and honour our heritage, and display our culture, whether that’s getting up early in the morning to get to a particular spot to watch the runners or staying at home cooking for your family to watch the parade.”
Like many Bermudians, Minister Darrell has his own traditions for the day, ones rooted in his role as a public servant and his personal connections to the island’s people and culture.
“I will get to Hamilton very early to cheer on the runners,” he said.
After the race, the day shifts gears for the Minister as he dons his official hat.
“I will then do official duties, interviews and judge the floats,” he said.
“I will take position on Front Street and watch the parade before joining my family to enjoy the day in the afternoon.”
“We understand everyone is putting in a lot of work [into the floats], so we try to make sure there’s categories everyone can be successful in,” he added.
