THE BLOG MILWAUKEE WITH KIDS SHARES THEIR TOP WEEKEND PICKS. HEY CALLIE, GREAT TO HAVE YOU BACK ON TALKING ABOUT THE BEST EVENTS HAPPENING AROUND THE MILWAUKEE AREA WITH YOUR BLOG. MILWAUKEE WITH KIDS. THIS WEEKEND IS A REALLY EXCITING FESTIVAL ON THE LAKEFRONT. THIS IS THE GIFT OF WINGS KITE FESTIVAL. YES, I LOVE THIS FESTIVAL. THEY DO IT EVERY YEAR ON MEMORIAL DAY. IT’S FREE ADMISSION, FREE PARKING, AND THERE’S PLENTY OF IT DOWN IN VETERANS PARK. THERE’S A GRAND LAUNCH OF KITES WHERE THERE’S 600 KITES IN THE AIR. THEY DO. THEY HAVE KITE FLYING DEMO TEAMS, WHICH ARE SO IMPRESSIVE. THERE ARE SEVERAL PEOPLE DOING THE EXACT SAME THING WITH THEIR KITES. IT’S LIKE REALLY A REALLY COOL SIGHT TO SEE AND JUST ALL KINDS OF FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES. SO IT’S A REALLY FUN ONE. I LOVE THAT, AND WHAT’S MORE CHILDLIKE THAN A KITE? SO, SO MUCH FUN TO INTRODUCE YOUR KIDS TO THAT. ALSO THIS WEEKEND WE’RE KICKING OFF A REALLY COOL NEW EXHIBIT AT BETTY BRINN CHILDREN’S MUSEUM. IT’S CALLED STORYLAND. YES. SO LIKE YOU SAID, IT OPENS THIS WEEKEND AND IT ACTUALLY RUNS THROUGH THE SUMMER, I THINK THROUGH SEPTEMBER 7TH. SO IT’S A TEMPORARY EXHIBIT, BUT BASICALLY IT CELEBRATES THESE BELOVED CHILDREN’S STORIES WITH THESE LIFE SIZED SCENES THAT KIDS CAN ACTUALLY STEP INTO AND SPEND TIME INSIDE OF THE STORYBOOK, ESSENTIALLY. SO THE IDEA AND THEN THERE’S INTERACTIVE PLAY EXPERIENCES, AND THE IDEA IS TO DEVELOP THOSE EARLY LITERACY SKILLS AND A LOVE OF READING. ADORABLE LOVE. THE FACT THAT THEY’RE TYING IN THE BOOKS AND THE FUN ALL TOGETHER. AND FINALLY, THIS WEEKEND, IT’S A LONG WEEKEND FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE, AND WE CAN’T FORGET WHY IT IS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. TONS OF ACTIVITIES, EVENTS, AND PARADES HAPPENING AROUND OUR AREA. YEAH, SO ALL WEEKEND LONG THERE’LL BE FALLS MEMORIAL FEST IN MENOMONEE FALLS, AND THAT’S A FREE FAMILY FRIENDLY FESTIVAL. KIDZONE CAR SHOW, VENDORS, ALL OF THAT. THERE ARE A FEW PARADES AROUND TOWN WHITEFISH BAY, ELM GROVE, MENOMINEE FALLS, AND THEN THERE’S A REALLY COOL DISPLAY IN VETERANS PARK, A REALLY MEANINGFUL DISPLAY OF THOUSANDS OF AMERICAN FLAGS PLANTED IN THE GROUND BY VOLUNTEERS, EACH ONE REPRESENTING A FALLEN SOLDIER WHO WAS A RESIDENT OF WISCONSIN. SO REALLY A MEANINGFUL DISPLAY FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY, SORT OF WALK THROUGH AND TAKE A MOMENT TO REFLECT ON. YEAH, BEAUTIFUL SIGHT TO SEE. IT’S ALWAYS KIND OF BREATHTAKING WHEN YOU’RE DOWN BY THE WATER AND GET A GLIMPSE AT THAT. KELLY, SO GREAT TO TALK TO YOU AGAIN ABOUT THE BEST THINGS HAPPENING AROUND MILWAUKEE. A family kite festival, a new museum storybook exhibit and special Memorial Day weekend events are just a few of the fun options for kids. WISN 12 News talked to the team at Milwaukee With Kids about its top recommended events for May 15-18.Gift of Wings Family Kite Festival at Veterans Park"I love this festival," said Calie Herbst, founder and editor in chief of Milwaukee With Kids. "They do it every year on Memorial Day weekend. It's free admission, free parking and there's plenty of it down in Veterans Park. There's a grand launch of kites where there's 600 kites in the air. They have kite-flying demo teams, which are so impressive. They're several people doing the exact same thing with their kites. It's a really cool sight to see. There's also all kinds of family-friendly activities. So it's a really fun one."Storyland: New exhibit at Betty Brinn Children's Museum"The new Storyland exhibit opens this weekend, and it actually runs through the summer until Sept. 7," said Herbst. "It's a temporary exhibit that basically celebrates these beloved children's stories with life-sized scenes that kids can actually step into and spend time inside of the storybook. Then, there's interactive play experiences, and the idea is to develop those early literacy skills and a love of reading." Memorial Day weekend events and parades around Southeast Wisconsin"All weekend long, there'll be Falls Memorial Fest in Menomonee Falls, and that's a free family-friendly festival, with a kids zone, car show, vendors, all of that," Herbst said. "There are a few parades around town: Whitefish Bay, Elm Grove, Menomonee Falls, and then there's a really cool display in Veterans Park. It's a really meaningful display of thousands of American flags planted in the ground by volunteers, each one representing a fallen soldier who was a resident of Wisconsin. So really a meaningful display for the whole family to sort of walk through and take a moment to reflect on." To see the full weekend guide for May 22-26 by Milwaukee With Kids, click here.
