Beaver Meadows

Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 9 a.m. Monday, May 26. Parade forms at Ss. Peter and Paul’s Byzantine Church parking lot at 8:45 a.m. and will march along Berwick, Broad, Dean and Pine streets to Memorial Park on Church Street, where the program will be conducted. A dedication and ribbon-cutting of the recreation building will follow. Beaver Meadows Citizens for Recreation will have free refreshments and picnic-style food for everyone. Participating in the parade will be the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary; VFW Poppy Queen Zoey Basista; Poppy King Michael Yackanicz; Hazleton Area High School Marching Band; Mayor Thad Williams; Guest speaker and Carbon County Commissioner Mike Sofranko; honor students Douglas Lazar and Logan Trammell; Beaver Meadows Girl Scouts; Beaver Meadows Volunteer Fire Company. In case of heavy rain, the ceremony will be in the recreation building.

Freeland Memorial Day Parade: Monday, May 26. Participating groups should be in place by 11:50 a.m. with program at 12:15 p.m. followed by the parade. Marching units will assemble in the American Legion parking lot. All motor vehicles will line up on Centre Street starting at Community Bank up to Walnut Street. Wally Golab will be lining up vehicles and Calvin Herring will line up ambulances and fire trucks. Lineup is: Freeland Police and Sheriff’s Department, American Legion and VFW Color Guard, Grand Marshall Bob DeJohn, St. Ann’s Band,  Legionnaires and Citizen of the Year, American Legion Auxiliary, Boy and Girl Scout Troop 473, Tip Tap Toe Dance, Freeland Sons of Erin, Freeland Minor and Little Leagues, any late registrations of marching units, Chicken Pluckers, Mike Stower Bottle Fill Propane truck, late registration race cars, classic cars, muscle cars and trucks, and Freeland Ambulance and fire department. Nuremberg Cemetery Association holds annual Memorial Day Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 26. Guest speaker, the Rev. Susan Schaeffer. Nuremberg Community Vacation Bible School: Begins Sunday, July 27, and ends Friday, Aug. 1, with the closing program, held 6 to 8:30 p.m. each night at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Poppy Weekend: American Legion Auxiliary Unit 360 will host a Poppy Weekend starting with Poppy Night on Friday, May 23. The night will feature a guest reader telling the story of Moina Belle Michael who is recognized for her work in establishing the red poppy as a symbol of remembrance for World War I veterans. There will be poppy crafts and ice cream sundaes. All ages are invited. The auxiliary also will host “Laps Around the Legion” on Saturday, May 24. Unit 360 members will start walking around the post home at 9 a.m., requesting $1 per lap or any donation to help raise money for the Poppy Fund, which supports projects to benefit veterans.

Plant swap: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21. Weatherly Area Museum. Bring plants and cuttings to share, meet other plant enthusiasts, maybe find a new perfect plant friend for your collection and purchase handcrafted planters from a local potter.
