Liam Manning, the Bristol City manager, has reiterated his desire to keep Nahki Wells at the club as they prepare for their Sky Bet Championship play-off semi-final at home to Sheffield United on Thursday [May 8].

Wells, whose contract expires in the summer, helped his side secure a play-off berth after drawing 2-2 at home to Preston North End at the weekend.

The Bermuda striker has scored ten league goals this term.

“I have no idea why you’d presume that, it doesn’t mean he’s not signing because he can still sign one,” Manning told Bristol Live when it was suggested Wells would be leaving at the end of the season.

“I’ve made it clear, I love Nahki, I’d keep him, I want to keep him.

“There are numerous things at the minute behind the scenes that need sorting to be fair.

“For me, it becomes quite difficult when you don’t know where you’re at and what’s going on; there are numerous bits that need to happen behind the scenes to see what’s going on.”

Wells, who helped Huddersfield Town win the Championship play-off final in 2017, has a key role to play over the next week or so, according to Manning.

“I think his leadership, his professionalism, just how he is as a person, I love working with him,” Manning added. “I think he’s a top, top guy who has been huge in everything we’ve done here, and you see that in his return.”
