About The Roots of Music:
The Roots of Music was created in 2007, during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, by Derrick Tabb, GRAMMY-Award winner and CNN Hero. The Roots of Music is true to our name: we are the roots of music education and culture in our city of New Orleans. Tabb watched as many of our city’s music education programs did not come back in the wake of the storm and he knew that in order to save the lives of the city’s youth as well as its culture, he had to create a space for youth and music to thrive. From its humble beginnings as a six-week drum camp at Tipitina’s, a bar and music venue, to being a $1 million dollar organization with three programs and full wrap-around support services, The Roots of Music has held true to the belief that music saves lives. The Roots of Music’s three programs include Sprouts of Music (ages 3 – 8 years), Marching Crusaders Band (ages 9 – 14 years), and The Roots Studio Academy (ages 15 – 18 years). The Roots of Music’s programming is designed and led by the highest caliber musicians and music educators. Our programming has won multiple awards including the Arhoolie award, The Adolf Busch Award, and finalist for The Lewis Prize. High profile performances include the Rose Bowl Parade, two international bookings in Summer 2018 (Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival in the Dutch Caribbean and Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in Canada) as well as the 2019 French Jazz Sous Les Pommiers festival as part of the D-Day 75th anniversary celebration in Normandy. About Second Line Arts Collective:
Second Line Arts Collective was co-founded by Gregory Agid and Darrian Douglas, two musicians and educators inspired by their mentors Alvin Fielder and Alvin Batiste. Rooted in New Orleans and built with love, SLAC began as a dream to reimagine music education—honoring tradition while teaching the tools for independence, longevity, and creative freedom. At Second Line Arts Collective, we believe every young artist deserves the tools to thrive—creatively, culturally, and financially. Our mission is simple but powerful: to build a future where music education isn’t just about playing the notes—it’s about understanding the world behind them. From toddlers discovering rhythm for the first time, to young musicians preparing for professional careers, we are committed to bridging the gap between artistic passion and real-world preparation. That’s why we created Little Stompers—to plant the seeds of creativity and cultural appreciation in our youngest learners. And it’s why we built the Sanaa Music Workshop—to empower emerging artists with the business knowledge, confidence, and community they need to turn their craft into a sustainable career. The Sanaa Music Workshop is designed for high school and college-age musicians. It goes beyond musicianship, teaching students how to build a life in the arts. We cover everything from financial literacy and creative marketing to tax law, contract negotiation, and return on investment. Our graduates leave prepared not just to perform—but to lead, build, and grow as professional artists. We exist to ensure that the next generation of artists doesn’t just survive in the arts—they lead, innovate, and thrive. Because art is power. And empowered artists change the world.
