Goodbye Hawaii, hello Mexico.

That’s the travel plan for a reader of this newsletter who answered a call for how U.S.-bound vacation plans have been revised as a result of the trade war.

“I’ve gone to Hawaii 32 times, the last 25 years in a row except for covid, where I missed one year,” this resident of Mont Tremblant, Que., said by e-mail. “But this year, after four months in Hawaii, we closed it down. We’re never going back. Furthermore, I’ll never enter the U.S. again. We’ve made reservations in Mexico for next winter – November until March. We’re looking forward to it.”

A recent story in the Globe and Mail documents a widespread shift in travel plans away from the United States as a result of the trade war. A highlight: The number of Canadian residents returning by vehicle from the U.S. in March fell 32 per cent from the year before, to 1.5 million. At major U.S. airports, international traffic from Canada and elsewhere has fallen 10 to 15 per cent compared with last year.
