Real Madrid icon Luka Modric has stunned the footballing world by revealing that he is set to become part owner of Swansea City. The 39-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest players of all time.

From humble beginnings in Croatia, his career took him to the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, where his performances caught the eye of Los Blancos. In 13 seasons with Madrid, he has picked up a host of honours, including four La Liga titles and six Champions League trophies.

Winning Croatian Player of the Year a staggering 13 times, Modric is known as a hero in his homeland after he helped his country reach the World Cup final in 2018.

Although beaten by France, Modric's reputation was enhanced through the tournament, and the prestigious Ballon d'Or award followed. As he's now set to undertake a new role with Swans, we've taken a closer look at the midfield maestro.

Net worth

Modric is estimated to have a net worth in the region of £56.8 million. While his annual salary is not publicly disclosed, it's believed to be around £7.5m per year with Real.

In 2019, it was reported that Modric had purchased a home in Madrid worth around £10.3m. Nike has also sponsored the player for over a decade yet it's unclear just how much he rakes in from his affiliation with the American sportswear giant.

Modric's wife

Modric is married to Vanja Bosnic. The couple have been married for 14 years, having tied the knot in 2010. Bosnic is also from a sporting background as her father, Milan, was a basketball player.

After graduating, Vanja found a job at Croatia’s renowned sports marketing firm, Mamic Sports Agency. This company also represented her future husband.

She crossed paths with the star in 2007 while he was playing for Dinamo Zagreb and dealt with him as a client. However, sparks flew, and they began dating.

Vanja then decided to quit her job at the sports agency and represent Modric as his agent. While she isn't thought to operate as his agent now, she did help facilitate the midfielder's big-money move to Madrid in 2012 for £30m. The pair now have three children together: Ivano, Ema and Sofia.

Swansea ownership

It's unclear how much of a stake Modric will take in Swansea at this stage. Yet the Croatian has opened up on why he's chosen to invest.

“Swansea has a strong identity, an incredible fanbase, and the ambition to compete at the highest level,” Modric said. “Playing at the highest level, I believe I can provide my experience to the club. My goal is to support the club’s growth in a positive way and to help to build an exciting future.”

Swansea are currently 12th in the Championship, and while it's not clear what Modric's goals with the Swans are, his investment is not thought to be a barrier to him continuing his playing career.

A club statement said: "Luka's investment in the club is an endorsement of the club's ambition and vision. He will play a key role in helping the club garner global attention and progress both on and off the pitch."
