Coachella 2025: Kneecap claim pro-Palestine message was cut from set

Irish trio Kneecap have claimed their pro-Palestinian messaging was cut from the live stream of their set at this year’s Coachella.

April 11th marked the group’s first appearance at the Californian festival. The band also used their set to get the American audience to celebrate the death of former British PM Margaret Thatcher by chanting, “Maggie’s in a box.”

During their performance, the band took the time in between songs to say, “If anybody was wondering, Margaret Thatcher’s still dead.” Soon after, when ‘Give It Up” by KC and The Sunshine Band played, the band started a singalong of “Maggie’s in a box” to the tune of the song.

When the band were informed that this was cut from the festival live-stream, the trio shared that it wasn’t the only section of their show removed from the broadcast.  “Not the only thing that was cut – our messaging on the US-backed genocide in Gaza somehow never appeared on screens either,” Kneecap wrote on socials. “Back next Friday Coachella and it’ll be sorted.”

Kneecap weren’t the only act to take a political stance during their Coachella set. Saturday night headliners Green Day used their slot on to make a lyrical alteration during their performance of ‘Jesus of Suburbia’.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong sang, “Runnin’ away from pain, like the kids from Palestine / Tales from another broken home,” in replacement of the original lyric that reads, “Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimised.”

Coachella will continue once again this coming weekend, where both Kneecap and Green Day will perform for the second time.
