Pacific Forum marks 50 years, continues vision of U.S.-Asia partnerships
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Top policymakers and defense experts will celebrate the Pacific Forum’s 50th anniversary Tuesday with a gala and keynote address by retired Admiral Harry Harris and special tribute to founder Joe Vasey.
The Oahu-based foreign policy research institute promotes engagement and collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region.
President and CEO David Santoro joined HNN’s Sunrise to talk about its programs, the Trump administration’s policies, and the current trade war between the U.S. and China.
“The relationship is not good,” he said. “We have some fundamental issues, trade issues, and also national security issues with China, and we all agree as a country that we have to fix them. The question is how we do that and whether tariffs are a good solution or not, but certainly we have fundamental issues that we need to address so the question is how we do it.”
“We can’t address the China challenge alone,” he said. “We have to strengthen our relationship with allies and partners, and this is how we can actually create better balance.”
