Dear Editor,
In response to the recent article, “US Embassy tells tourists avoid renting Jet Skis,” I believe that such a headline should never have made the news. The Bahamas is a paradise, drawing tourists from around the world to enjoy our sun, sand, and sea. Every time I visit another country, such as Canada, or cities in the United States, people often remark, “Wow, I wish I lived where you live,” or “It must be nice living there”.
Even many Bahamians who study or work abroad eagerly await their vacations so they can return to the place they call home.
Tourism is our number one industry, and it’s vital that visitors feel welcome and safe when they come to our shores. We should never want people to feel threatened or hesitant about participating in activities like jet skiing, which is a major part of our tourism experience.
It is disheartening to hear reports of female visitors being assaulted or raped while renting jet skis. Tourists come here to escape the cold, the stress of city life, and other pressures.
For them, The Bahamas is a wonderland, a place to relax and have fun. To have their vacation marred by such disturbing experiences is not only tragic but damaging to our reputation as a safe and welcoming destination.
I urge jet ski operators to show greater respect and responsibility.
These women, like all tourists, come to The Bahamas to enjoy the thrill of our beautiful waters. They deserve to experience it without fear or exploitation.
Let us operate with decency, providing the excitement and joy they seek while maintaining the safety and integrity of our tourism industry.
Sincerely,
— Jannique McDonald
