Malaysia's Under-23 World Championships campaign ends in semi-finals

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s campaign at the Under-23 World Championships in Pakistan ended after all three players were defeated in the semi-finals on Wednesday (April 9).

In the women’s category, Yee Xin Ying was the first to exit after a disappointing five-set clash with Hong Kong’s Chan Sin Yuk.

World No. 82 Xin Ying came back from two sets down against third seed Sin Yuk but ultimately lost 8-11, 6-11, 11-4, 11-7, 3-11.

Xin Ying had earlier thrilled the crowd by defeating second seed Malak Khafagy of Egypt in a five-set quarter-final match on Tuesday.

Hopes for a Malaysian in the women’s final were dashed when Aira Azman also lost in the semi-finals.

Aira fought hard against top seed Fayrouz Abouelkheir but could not prevent the Egyptian from winning 11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 11-4.

In the men’s category, C. Ameeshenraj faced disappointment as he ran out of energy against Pakistan’s Noor Zaman in the semi-finals.
