ArmInfo. The opening of Armenia's borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan after 30 years could radically change the situation, bringing Europe and Central Asia closer than ever. This was stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen at the Europe- Central Asia summit held today in Samarkand. The President of the European Commission also stressed the importance of simplifying border crossings between the countries of the region in terms of ensuring the effectiveness of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor. According to her, border crossings with both the countries of Central Asia and the countries of the South Caucasus are important for access to the Black Sea.
She also pointed out the geopolitical and economic importance of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor in terms of strengthening ties between Europe and the countries of Central Asia.
"Today, we open a new chapter in the long-standing friendship between Europe and Central Asia. With a new Strategic Partnership between our regions. ?12 billion in Global Gateway investments will support our shared priorities," she wrote.
On 1 December 2021, the European Commission and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy launched the Global Gateway Initiative, a new European strategy for high-tech, green and secure global connectivity in the areas of digitalisation, energy, transport, health, education and research. The Initiative aims to develop resilient and reliable connections for the benefit of people and the planet to tackle the most pressing global challenges, from climate change and environmental protection to improving health security, boosting competitiveness and developing global supply chains. The Global Gateway Initiative aims to mobilise up to ?300 billion in investment between 2021 and 2027 to secure a long-term global recovery, taking into account the needs of our partners and the EU's own interests.
