CINCINNATI (WKRC) — Chris Lawrence, a Northern Kentucky native, is illuminating some of the world's biggest stages as the lighting operator for the band Nothing More. Lawrence, who describes himself as "the guy that brightens everyone's day," tours the country ensuring fans receive the visual spectacle they expect from the high-energy act.
Lawrence's journey into concert lighting began after the COVID-19 pandemic shifted his focus from playing in local bands to production. Following his training at a stagehand school, he started touring with renowned acts like Maggie Rogers, Exodus, and Gojira, lighting up their performances along the way.
"Good concert visuals help convey the feeling of the music," Lawrence said. "I think it adds like almost like an element of emotion and depth."
The lighting effects Lawrence creates can vary nightly, adapting to each song and venue. "Sometimes you're in a really big room and sometimes you're not, and you have to adjust accordingly," he said. "I could do anywhere from a small club to a big arena like this to a massive festival like Rock in Rio."
During shows, Lawrence manages over 40 lights, transforming performances into immersive experiences that enhance the atmosphere for both the band and the audience. Despite not being on stage, Lawrence finds fulfillment in his role. "I miss being on that side of the stage; however, with this, I'm still a part of the show, and yeah, it's much different, but you're still around what you love," he said.
Chris Lawrence and Nothing More will perform at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on April 9.
