TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The progressive Indian restaurant in Bangkok, Gaggan, was named Asia’s Best Restaurant at the 13th edition of the awards, held on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, in Seoul, South Korea.
This award marks the fifth time for Gaggan, which last year ranked third, to be crowned the best restaurant. The restaurant, located in the Wattana district, Bangkok, was only opened in 2019.
Gaggan Anand, the owner, reflected on the restaurant’s victory, claiming that he did not expect it would be “a gastronomic hub.”
“When we started the restaurant, it was not about me but about Asia,” Anand said, as quoted from Channel News Asia on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Tokyo and Bangkok successfully dominated the ranking list with nine places each, while Hong Kong and Singapore followed with seven restaurants. The host city, Seoul, and Shanghai, each had four representatives.
Furthermore, the special awards given included the Best Sommelier in Asia, won by owner-sommelier Kazutaka Ozawa from Crony in Tokyo, and the Best Pastry Chef, achieved by Dej Kewkacha from Gaggan at Louis Vuitton in Bangkok. Vicky Cheng, chef-owner of Wing and Vea in Hong Kong, won the Inedit Damm Chefs' Choice Award, the only peer-voted award. Locavore NXT in Ubud, ranked 92, won the Sustainable Restaurant Award.
The late Filipino chef Margarita Fores was also posthumously awarded the Woodford Reserve Icon Award, received by her son, Amado, and welcomed with enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Prior to the awards ceremony, Toyo Eatery in Manila was announced as the winner of the Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award, while Farmlore in Bengaluru received the American Express One to Watch Award, given to the restaurant deemed most likely to enter the list of the 50 best restaurants in Asia in the coming years.
Thai chef Chudaree 'Tam' Debhakam from Baan Tepa in Bangkok was named the Best Female Chef for her consistent work in showcasing local produce and biodiversity at the restaurant, which started from her home and transformed into a dining space in the middle of the city.
It is worth noting that there are 16 cities represented in this year's list of the 50 Best Restaurants in Asia, with the restaurants selected by a panel of 350 experts with balanced gender composition, including food writers, critics, chefs, restaurant owners, and regional culinary leaders.
