The government is hoping to finalize the modality for the Nu 1bn support programme this month. During the Meet The Press session today, the Industry, Commerce, and Employment Minister said the programme will support class XII graduates in continuing their studies.
During the election campaign, the government pledged to support one youth from households where no member has previously studied or worked abroad in countries like Australia, the Middle East, or Canada, by offering concessionary education loans.
Contradicting the pledges and emphasising the importance of prioritising studies over earning money, the students will be sent to universities within Bhutan and in India.
To facilitate this initiative, the government is launching a Nu 1bn support programme that will provide education and training loans at minimal interest rates to all Class XII graduates.
MoICE Minister Namgyal Dorji said, “The concept and modalities are nearly finalised, and the implementation will apply to all. By default, it may appear to be for Gyalsups, as students who complete Class 12 will join as Gyalsups after undergoing training.”
He said the students can pursue degree programmes, postgraduate studies, and post-Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) education.
Through this initiative, the government aims to expand opportunities for youth to study and strengthen the country’s skilled workforce and address financial barriers.
