A Coventry mum has shared her anger and sadness after her child was left feeling scared to walk to and from school following a harrowing attack. The Year 9 pupil was forced to her knees after being confronted by a crowd of teenagers and then punched and kicked while the ordeal was filmed.

The attack only ended when a man passing by intervened, allowing the girl to head back into her school for help. The horrific clip was then mockingly shared among the group and their pals on messaging platforms.

Police are investigating the incident which happened outside Westwood Academy on Mitchell Avenue last Tuesday (25 March). The victim was left with bruising to her face and a cut lip.

The girl's mum Vicky Whitwell said: "My daughter was leaving school a little later than usual and was making her way home on her bike. She was surrounded by a group of teens including a girl, who she didn't know, who confronted her saying that my daughter got her kicked out of school.

"She demanded my daughter say sorry, which she did. The girl told her to get on her knees and say it, my daughter was just trying to get home and get out of the situation so complied.

"As soon as my daughter was on her knees the girl attacked her while all the others giggled and took videos. Members of the public walked by until a gentleman intervened and my daughter was able to get away and return to school for help."

Asked how her daughter is now Ms Whitwell said: "She is shaken up and doesn't feel safe going to and from school. My daughter is not a normal teen, she is so kind and thoughtful and really does go the extra mile."

Ms Whitwell thinks her daughter's caring nature may have inadvertently led to the incident last week. Back in February her daughter had intervened when a group attacked her best friend.

A video of the attack has been obtained by the family and provided to the police. "Seeing the video and the humiliation of making her get to her knees and the confusion on her face," Ms Whitwell said. "It was so upsetting."

Addressing the man who intervened, she added: "We want to thank this gentleman, because if he had not confronted the youths, the abuse and attack could have continued and who knows what might have happened."

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We are investigating reports a teenage girl was assaulted by another girl on Mitchell Avenue, Coventry at around 3.30 pm on Tuesday 25 March.

"Thankfully the victim was not seriously injured, and officers are in contact with her and her family. Our investigation is continuing and we would ask anyone with information to contact us via Live Chat or by calling 101 quoting 20/188752/25."
