Judge rules on extreme heat in prison

AUSTIN, Texas — A federal judge has found the extreme heat in Texas prisons that don’t have air conditioning is “plainly unconstitutional.” But the judge declined to order the state to immediately fix the problem, which could cost billions.
The ruling affirmed claims by advocates of people incarcerated in Texas, where summer heat routinely soars above 100 degrees Fahrenheit for weeks. But they will have to continue pressing their lawsuit to a jury trial.
Police: Man arrested for trying to kill wife
HONOLULU, Hawaii — Police in Hawaii say they have arrested a Maui doctor after he allegedly tried to kill his wife by pushing her off a hiking trail and hitting her multiple times on the head with a rock. Gerhardt Konig, 46, is in custody on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder, but has not been charged.
Police say a 36-year-old woman reported the incident and was hospitalized in critical condition. Konig was arrested that evening after an hourslong search and brief foot chase.
Airman charged with child exploitation
NEW YORK — An airman stationed in Alaska has been charged with child exploitation.
Prosecutors say David Ibarra, 31, paid a young girl in Long Island to send him explicit images. They say he befriended the 9-year-old on TikTok by posing as a teenage boy. They say he moved the conversation to the children’s gaming platform Roblox and ultimately to a phone messaging system. They say he paid nearly $200 in more than a dozen payments to get the girl to send him explicit videos, texting her specific instructions.
At least 24 killed in wind-driven fires
SEOUL– Wind-driven wildfires in South Korea’s southern regions have killed at least 24 people, forced the evacuation of 28,800 others and destroyed more than 300 structures.
The death toll included a pilot who died after a helicopter crashed during efforts to contain wildfires in the southeastern town of Uiseong, one of the hardest-hit areas. The National Fire Agency said at least 26 people sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Bolsonaro to stand trial over coup plan
RIO DE JANEIRO — A panel of Brazil Supreme Court justices has unanimously accepted charges against former President Jair Bolsonaro over an alleged attempt to stay in office after his 2022 election defeat.
They have ordered the former leader to stand trial. Brazil’s prosecutor general has charged Bolsonaro and 33 others of attempting a coup. The attempt included a plan to poison his successor and current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and kill a Supreme Court judge.
Suden aid group: 54 killed in airstrike
CAIRO — Aid groups in Sudan say a military airstrike hit a local market in the country’s western region, igniting a huge fire and killing at least 54 people.
The military has denied targeting civilians. The strike took place Monday in the village of Tora, north of el-Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur province, said Adam Rejal, a spokesman for the General Coordination, a local group helping displaced people in Darfur.
