The year 2022 has come to an end, but the images photographed this year will remain.

The year was marked by expanded coronavirus vaccinations and boosters for all ages, a return to many activities that had been paused by COVID-19, including the Stagecoach and Coachella music festivals and the opening of The Cheech museum in downtown Riverside.

Our photographers — from The Press-Enterprise, The Sun, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, and Redlands Daily Facts — were there to capture these events and more. Here are some of their favorite images and their thoughts about photographing them.

Following a scorching and long day covering the Fairview fire in Hemet this past September I was about to call it a day when I noticed the winds had picked up and were pushing the fire toward a neighborhood. I saw a pair of firefighters approximately 3/4 of a mile away attempting to light a backfire when I shot this image with a 400-mm lens. The winds were increasing, which pushed the fire over a half mile toward homes in a quick 20 minutes. Fortunately, hand crews and an aerial attack kept the fire from damaging any homes in the area.

For more than five years, the Carousel Mall in downtown San Bernardino has been closed, boarded up and empty.

I had never been inside this mall before it closed and have always been curious about how it would look inside after multiple break-ins and fires. In late August, our columnist David Allen and I got a chance to go inside for a tour with the security team. We had to wear a hard hat and a KN95 mask. We were told that squatters were living inside. Power had been shut off for years, so upon entering it was initially almost pitch-black.

We carefully made our way toward the center of the mall. Luckily, the concourse of the mall was lit by skylights, which provided nice light for making pictures. The photo I chose from this assignment was made with a wide-angle lens taken from the second level overlooking the concourse, where the floors are littered with trash and debris. This photo captures the eerie feeling of being inside a post-apocalyptic-like mall.

Having had the opportunity to shoot and attend every Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio since it began in 2007, I’ve had the pleasure of being able to see almost every major name country artist.

There have been many memorable performances over the years, including Garth Brooks, Shania Twain and the Eagles, amongst others. But this past year, Carrie Underwood stepped it up a notch, when she brought out surprise guest Axl Rose from Guns N’ Roses to perform a pair of the band’s songs to a completely shocked and grateful crowd.

It ranks as my top moment ever at Stagecoach. Plus it was great to be back after a three-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A participant balances on the “Beam,” by artist Benjamin Langholz, as a plume of smoke rises from a burn during Burning Man at the Black Rock Desert near Gerlach, Nevada, on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022. (File photo by Watchara Phomicinda, The Press-Enterprise/SCNG)

This photo was made at sunset during the weeklong Burning Man gathering at the Black Rock Desert near Gerlach, Nevada.

I made this photo using a telephoto lens to compress all the elements together. Made of beams, this whimsical and intriguing art piece by artist Benjamin Langholz invited participants to walk across it. A crowd gathered as people took turns crossing the beam while another art piece was burning in the background.

This photo encompasses the elements of interactive art, participation, community and creative expression — which are vital to the thriving culture of Burning Man.

Rodeos are one of my favorite events to photograph.

This was a pretty simple image taken on the final day of the 36th Norco Mounted Posse Rodeo. I went on this day because I knew the late afternoon light, known to photographers as “the golden hour,” would be gorgeous, especially when it is backlit.

This photo of a team roper came out better than I had hoped for and made for a really nice feature.
