Norwegian koselig is winning over coffee-loving Croatians

The Norwegian word koselig, kos for short, often conjures up images of crackling fireplaces, whipped cream-topped hot chocolate in front of a movie screen, and sharing laughter with loved ones.

But more than anything, koselig is a feeling. It can be found at home, under a fuzzy blanket, but it can also be found in nature, in a cafe, or elsewhere. What matters is the emotion of contentment and enjoyment certain circumstances evoke in an individual.

From coffee culture and leisurely walks along the beach, to spending hours with friends playing games and doing nature activities, koselig is important in Croatian culture, too – whether Croatians call it that or not.

Here are some of the activities that draw in even the most sun-loving travelers from the Adriatic to Norway and its kos; as reported by Time Out Croatia.

Marveling during a scenic ride on the Flåm Railway

Croatia is used to natural beauty, from Plitvice National Park to the pristine Pelješac Peninsula; and, really, everything between.

The Flam Railway is, then, the ideal activity for Croatian travelers. Also known as Flamsbana, this railway is one of the world’s best train journeys.

During the train ride, koselig seekers can take in numerous mountainsides, towering waterfalls, and gaping valleys. Bonus points in they sip a cup of warm coffee or hot tea, bring a blanket, and just revel in the kos.

Tasting waffles á la Norway

It’s well-known that Croatians love their coffee, which is often paired with a freshly baked good, either homemade or picked up from a neighborhood bakery.

Norwegians also love their baked goods – in particular, especially when paired with a cup of coffee and a friend.

Waffles are found all over the country, from restaurants to private homes. To make things all the more kos, waffles are most often served heart-shaped in Norway.

Rocking at the OverOslo Music Festival

What better way to spend time with loved ones and invoke koselig than with phenomenal music?

The OverOslo Music Festival is among the Norway’s largest music festivals, with concerts exhibiting Norwegian and international pop, rock, hip hop, and electronics.

The festival takes place on Oslo’s Grefsenkollen Plateau, which provides a beautiful view of the city skyline, snaking adjacent fjord, and leafy forests surrounding it all.

Experiencing Norwegian Coffee Culture

Both Norwegians and Croatians take their coffee seriously… Very seriously!

Drinking on the Mediterranean Sea or the North Sea makes no difference – these two cultures savour coffee all day, every day (basically).

In both Norway’s and Croatia’s major cities, a coffee shop (or two) can be found almost on every corner.

Norway’s unique coffee culture, paired with koselig-inducing winter scenery or a chilly breeze, is just the right mix for coffee-loving Croatians wishing to experience something new.

Chasing the elusive northern lights

Here’s another nature activity the Adriatic’s inhabitants go to Norway for – one they could never experience so far south.

Norway is one of the best countries in the world for seeing the northern lights.

From central Norway and up (for the most adventurous souls, maybe Svalbard is an option), the northern lights regularly grace the country’s night skies.
