Police have set up a critical incident team to investigate the death of an 18-year-old man at a music festival in Sydney's west on Saturday night, after he tripped and suffered head injuries in the fall.

Police were told the man was running on Riverina Avenue in Homebush shortly after 10.30pm on Saturday when he tripped over the feet of some people sitting on the ground.

It appears the man was attending Knockout Circuz, a popular musical festival held at Sydney Showground on Saturday night.

Security guards assisted the man, who was drifting in and out of consciousness, after he sustained head injuries in the fall.

The 18-year-old then became violent towards security guards, prompting police to be called to the scene.

He was restrained and taken to a medical facility where he was initially treated, before NSW Ambulance paramedics transported him to Westmead Hospital for further treatment.

The man's condition deteriorated overnight and he died at about 1am on Sunday morning.

A critical incident team will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the investigation to be subject to independent review and all information to be provided to the Coroner.

The music festival was attended by approximately 16, 899 people.

In a separate operation, officers from the South West Metropolitan Region arrested and charged five people with possessing MDMA.

Among them was a 17-year-old female teenager who was arrested and charged after police located 379 MDMA capsules.

She was granted conditional bail to appear at a Children's Court in January 2018.

Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
