The International Olympic Committee decides on whether to include up to five new sports — skateboarding, surfing, karate, sports climbing and baseball/softball — in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The Impact plays a friendly match against Italian Serie A club AS Roma at Saputo Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 4

The Travelers Championship PGA golf tournament, the last before the Olympics, begins in Cromwell, Conn.

The Alouettes play the B.C. Lions at Molson Stadium at 7 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 5

Suicide Squad is the big movie opening in theatres.

Food trucks gather outside the Olympic Stadium for the monthly First Fridays event.

The ÎleSoniq music festival begins at Jean Drapeau Park.

The Games of the XXXI Olympiad begin with the opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the first South American city to host the Olympics. The games include two new countries — Kosovo and South Sudan — and two new sports — rugby sevens and golf. Trampoline star Rosie MacLennan, Canada’s only gold-medallist in London in 2012, will carry the flag for her country.

The first medals of the Rio Olympics are given out, in archery, cycling, fencing, judo, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers holds a protest march at 1 p.m. ending at Justin Trudeau’s constituency office.

Former Packers quarterback Brett Favre is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, along with former 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo, Jr., former Colts coach Tony Dungy, former Rams linebacker Kevin Greene, former Colts receiver Marvin Harrison, former Rams tackle Orlando Pace, former Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler, and former Lions guard Dick Stanfel.

Quebec’s two-week construction holiday officially ends.

Sunday, Aug. 7

Medal events at the Olympics today: archery, road cycling, diving, fencing, judo, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.

Thailand votes in a constitutional referendum that would make more of the country’s legislature appointed rather than elected.
